Every December, I find myself standing in the holiday aisles, surrounded by glittery plastic, inflatable Santas, and endless strings of lights, and feeling a little overwhelmed. As much as I love the magic of Christmas, I’ve also seen how much waste the season creates. From plastic garlands that fall apart after one year to energy-draining lights, the holiday spirit can easily get tangled up with overconsumption.

But here’s the good news: learning how to decorate sustainably doesn’t mean giving up the sparkle, the cozy glow, or the festive traditions. In fact, the most sustainable decorations often feel more meaningful because they’re rooted in nature, creativity, and family connection. This year, I’m sharing some of my favorite eco-friendly swaps and ideas for Christmas trees, garlands, lights, candles, ornaments, and more!

For many families, the tree is the centerpiece of holiday décor. But it can also be a major source of waste.

• Living trees: One year, a friend of mine brought home a small potted pine and decorated it with homemade ornaments. After the holidays, their family replanted it in their yard. Now, every Christmas, they get to see it growing taller. A living reminder of that season.

• Artificial trees: If you already have one, keep using it! To balance its footprint, commit to at least 10 years of use.

Choosing the right tree comes down to what works best for your family. Whether that means a rented living tree, a sustainably farmed option, or a creative DIY alternative, the most important thing is that it brings joy while respecting the planet.

Garlands & Wreaths That Bring Nature Inside

Instead of plastic garlands, you could turn decorating into a mindful family ritual. Try drying orange slices in the oven to make little “sun circles” for the kids. Then try threading them with twine. This becomes less about perfection and more about slowing down together.
