I remember the first time I opened a jar of store-bought puree, thinking she’d easily finish it in a couple of sittings. Instead, she barely touched it, and two days later, I found myself tossing it out.

I hated the waste—not just the food but also the packaging. I realized this would really add up over time. I started looking into ways to make my own baby food in smaller portions, freeze it for later, and even repurpose leftovers into things like oatmeal and pancakes. These simple changes made a huge difference, and I felt so much better knowing I wasn’t wasting as much food (or money!). Making simple, sustainable choices at mealtime not only cuts waste but also sets a positive example for your child. It’s not about being perfect—it’s about being intentional and resourceful with what we already have.

How much puree does a baby actually eat per stage?

This was a question I wish I understood better when my baby started solids. In the beginning, they’re only eating 1-2 teaspoons per meal, and even after a few months, they still only need a few tablespoons per serving.

Most store-bought baby food containers hold 4-6 oz (12-20 teaspoons), which means you likely won’t use it all before it expires. If your baby isn’t eating the same thing multiple times a day, it’s likely going to waste. The same goes for homemade purees if you make too much at once and don’t have a plan for freezing.

How to Avoid Over-Preparing Food:

Another easy way to plan portions is to think in stages, not just ages. During the first few weeks of solids, focus on tasting and exploration rather than volume. Once your baby consistently finishes small servings, slowly scale up. Keeping a simple food tracker—either on paper or your phone—helps you notice patterns in how much your baby eats and which foods they enjoy most. This way, you’ll make just enough without waste.

Storing Leftovers Properly

Homemade baby food doesn’t last long in the fridge (max 3 days), so it’s best to have a plan to freeze portions ahead of time.

Best Freezing Containers (Sustainable & Reusable)

Here are my favorite sustainable, reusable storage options:

  • Ice Cube Trays – Great for portion control (each cube = ~2 tablespoons).
  •  Silicone Molds – Come in different sizes for more flexibility.
  • Small Jars – Repurpose glass jars (but be sure to use freezer-safe ones!).

How to Thaw Baby Food Safely⏳ Overnight in the fridge – Easiest method, just transfer from the freezer the night before.
💧 Cold water bath – Place the container in a bowl of cool water, changing it every 20 minutes.
🔥 Heat gently – Use a small pot on the stove or the microwave’s defrost setting.

To keep your baby food tasting fresh, try labeling each container with the puree name and date before freezing. This not only helps you rotate older food first (reducing waste) but also prevents mystery purees later. If you’re using glass jars, make sure to leave at least half an inch of space at the top—liquids expand when frozen. I also recommend freezing purees on a baking sheet before transferring to a container so they don’t stick together.

Creative Ways to Use Leftovers

Even with smart planning and portioning, you might still end up with extra purees. But don’t toss them! I actually love it when I do, because it means I get to be creative in what I am going to repurpose them into! Here are some delicious ways to use them:

Easy Leftover Baby Food Pancakes Recipe

Use your extra purees in these simple, healthy pancakes!

🥞 Ingredients:


✅ 1 ripe banana (potassium & fiber)
✅ 1 egg (or flax egg for a plant-based option)
✅ 1 tbsp flaxseed meal (for omega-3s & fiber) – optional
✅ 1-2 tbsp leftover baby food puree
✅ 1-2 tbsp oat or whole wheat flour – optional if you want a firmer pancake

👩‍🍳 Instructions:


1️⃣ Mash banana in a bowl into a smooth puree.
2️⃣ Add egg (or flax egg), mix well.
3️⃣ Stir in flaxseed, baby food, and flour (if using).
4️⃣ Heat a pan with butter or oil and pour small pancakes.
5️⃣ Cook ~4 minutes per side, then serve warm!

🍓 Try this with: sweet potato, banana, apple, or carrot purees!

These will stay good in the fridge for up to 4 days and in the freezer for up to 2 months! I make these at least once a week and sometimes double the recipe for the whole family to enjoy them.

Tips for Success:

  • You can freeze cooked pancakes between parchment paper and reheat in the toaster.
  • For babies under one year, skip added salt or sugar.
  • Try adding cinnamon or a pinch of nutmeg for extra flavor.
  • Double the batch for the whole family—it’s an easy way to reduce food waste and save time in the mornings.

Another fun idea is to turn leftover purees into popsicles for older babies or toddlers. Simply mix fruit or veggie puree with yogurt or breast milk, pour into small silicone molds, and freeze. It’s a refreshing snack that reduces waste and doubles as a teething soother! You can also add a spoonful of puree into sauces, soups, or even mac and cheese for an extra nutrient boost without altering flavor.

Sustainable Food Scraps & Composting

You might not feed certain parts of fruits and veggies to your baby (e.g., peels, stems), but instead of tossing them, put them to good use!

🥕 Make Vegetable Broth:

  • Collect scraps like carrot tops, broccoli stems, and celery leaves.
  • Simmer them with water & spices for a low-waste homemade broth.
  • Strain and store for soups or cooking grains!

🌱 Start Composting at Home:

If you can’t use certain scraps, composting is a great way to reduce waste. I keep a small compost bin under my kitchen sink and empty it outside every few days.

If you’re not ready for full composting yet, start small! Keep veggie scraps in a freezer bag until you have enough to make broth or find a local compost drop-off point through your city’s website or an app like ShareWaste. Teaching your child early about composting—like letting them toss banana peels into the bin—can make it a fun, hands-on eco habit for the whole family.

Even in small spaces, you can:
✅ Use a countertop compost bin.
✅ Try vermicomposting (composting with worms!).
✅ Drop off scraps at a local composting site.
